Major capital projects bring scale, complexity, uncertainty of outcomes, and high stakes related to cost and schedule as well as other critical liabilities. There are often a plethora of governance challenges with the inherent competing interests of a host of key stakeholders including Board members, owners, contractors, architects, engineers, and construction staff. These engineering and construction projects typically also deal with highly complex technical issues as well as an ever-increasing amount of data and decision points critical to project success. Expert resources and management capability can be hard to find. However, failure is not an option as the projects are often essential for capitalizing on a market opportunity or sometimes the continued survival of the business. 

 

Our Capital Projects team is comprised of some 30 professionals nationally who are dedicated to helping our clients successfully deliver large-scale capital projects and programs on time and on budget. We also help our clients reduce risk and achieve the best value from their portfolios of capital projects.

Responsibilities

 

Our Toronto office is currently recruiting aspiring Project Managers with experience in leading project management techniques to add to the consulting depth of our Capital Projects team.  Working with Deloitte Partners, Directors and Senior Managers, our experienced Managers help our clients:

  • Define, evaluate, plan and prepare for undertaking a major initiative;
  • Provide hands on management of project delivery including the scope, cost, schedule, quality, risk, contracts, communications and reporting for complex initiatives;
  • Strengthen clients’ management framework by producing the industrial-strength processes, controls, systems and people necessary to manage and govern large initiatives and contracts;
  • Provide independent oversight of projects and programs through project/contract reviews, assessments and/or audits, providing advice to our clients senior executives and Boards;
  • Proactively strategize and manage procurement, contracts and claims; and
  • Develop a portfolio level view of the enterprise collection of initiatives and help establish management framework to deliver the best value from that portfolio.

We are also called on to recover or rebaseline projects in crisis and advise the clients’ Senior Management, C-suite and Boards on how to best achieve their capital program objectives.

As an experienced Manager adding to our team’s technical depth, you will be responsible for the following:

  • Collaborating with our clients to plan and manage the successful execution of assignments using multi-disciplinary teams;
  • Providing leadership, counselling and mentorship to more junior staff on both individual assignments but also more broadly as part of their career development;
  • Enhancing our expertise, methods, tools and intellectual capital in the capital projects arena; and
  • Working with our Partners and Senior Managers to develop new business opportunities and produce winning proposals to secure assignments with clients; and
  • Expanding our national capital projects team’s presence in the market.

External Posting Qualifications

  • To provide the additional technical project management depth to complement our existing consulting expertise, we are seeking people with a background that includes the following:
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or significant equivalent engineering and construction management related experience;
  • 7-10 years or more of direct responsibility for project management, contract management and/or in a project control roles preferably working on projects and programs ranging in size from $100Million to preferably $Billions;
  • Had responsibility for planning, estimation and risks analysis for significant work packages using modern techniques to create robust integrated baselines for scope, cost, schedule and risk;
  • A track record in analysis and forecasting of complex engineering and construction projects and be particularly skilled in progress measurement, risk assessment as well as executive reporting;
  • Familiarity with related standards for project and program management (ANSI/PMI, AACEI etc)
  • Familiarity with commonly used project management technology solutions (including, Primavera P6, Ecosys, Unifier, Primavera Risk Analyzer and/or PRISM, etc.)
  • This experience must have been gained in Power & Utilities,  Transit/Transportation, Public Sector Infrastructure, Energy, Mining, Manufacturing/CPG or Aerospace & Defence sectors;

 

You must be able to demonstrate:

  • An ability to thrive in a team and collaborative setting, to contribute and share ideas, to regularly seek guidance and feedback, coach less experienced staff, and work to ensure the success of the team;
  • Previous experience managing multi-disciplinary teams to solve complex problems;
  • The ability to work independently and at a fast pace when required, take initiative, maintain a positive attitude and show a willingness to learn;
  • Strong commitment to professionalism and client service excellence;
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills; and
  • Canadian & US travel required; occasional broader international travel. Candidates must be able and flexible to travel for client engagements, as required.

External Posting Qualifications

Preference will also be given to candidates who also bring the following:

  • Professional designation in engineering, architecture or an equivalent discipline;
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) or equivalent;
  • Experience managing projects and programs using the following techniques:
    • Earned Value Management; and
    • Quantitative Risk Analysis fr cost and schedule using Monte Carlo Simulation methods.
  • Experience gained at a leading EPC/EPCM or Prime Contractor Firm/company;
  • Portfolio management implementation and/or restructuring experience;
  • Prior experience in competitive proposals and working in a consulting environment are also assets.
